History of Physical Education Essay A brief history of physical education in the United States would kick off in the nineteenth century. There was growing popularity of formal physical education programs all across Europe where calisthenics and gymnastics were all the rage. American schools looked to follow the European model by incorporating physical education into the curriculum for primary and secondary schools. And a brief history of physical education would not be complete with a consideration of institutes of higher education that gradually built up extremely successful sports programs. How it began The brief history of physical education would start in just about 1820 when schools focused on gymnastics, hygiene training and care and development of the human body. By the year 1950, over 400 institutes had introduced majors in physical education. The Young Mens Christian Association launched its very first chapter in 1851 and focused on physical activities. Colleges were encouraged to focus on intramural sports particularly track, field and football. But physical education became a formal requirement following the civil war when many states opted to pass laws that required schools to incorporate a substantial physical education component into their curriculums. In Greece the latest years special education has followed the same progression as in any other country in Europe but in a very slow pace. Specifically, Special Education services were available to Greek children since the beginning of the 20th century, adapted Physical Education was introduced the last two decades. After the first half of the century various associations developed intense activity with the aim to protect specific groups of people with special needs such as, the blind, the deaf and motionaly disabled. The initiative had clearly charitable characteristics with pity as the main feeling. The state welfare was non-existent every kind of care and prevention was accorded to the authorization of the charitable organization that with full power decided during the course of the years about the life and the future of thousands of people with special needs. The offers of the individuals had the form of institutional care (enclosed protection) with the offer of basic knowledge. The interest of private initiative led to the introduction of various institutional units and schools; firstly in the area of Attica and then in other cities of Greece. Some of the first institutions, which were created, was the â€Å"house of the blind† in 1906, the â€Å"house of the deaf and dump† in 1923, and the â€Å"Hellenic organization for the protection and rehabilitation of disabled children†. The first state interferences began in 50’s and concerned mainly legislation arrangements for the blind and after for the motionaly disabled. The state however was interested in the group of the mentally retarded children and later in the motionaly disabled, which the private agents had completely ignored. The first school, which was founded by the state for the mentally retarded children, was the â€Å" original special school of Athens† in 1937. Many people considerthe state interference in the space of special education during the 30’s non-occasional. The considerable evolutions of pedagogical and psychology sciences, the establishment of obligatory attendance for all the children and the great number of mentally retarded children comparatively with other groups of â€Å" inferior individuals† was a reality which the Greek state could not ignore. From the mid of 50’s the 70’s the developments in special education came again from the wide activity of the private sector while the state followed with mainly legislation inferences and the well known sympathy towards the people with special needs. So, during this period educational units were founded and â€Å"deaf and dumb† schools in various areas of Greece and units for motionaly-disabled people. Another offer of the private sector was the foundation of children’s neuropsychiatry clinics and schools for the group of â€Å"marginal adults† and â€Å" mentally retarded children†. The exemplification of the Greek state and the educational policy of the western countries begins in the mid of the 70’s approximately. Constructivism is a theory of teaching and learning based on the idea that cognition is developed through mental construction. This suggests that humans learn, constructing new knowledge by piecing together their past experiences. Another similarity between Piaget and Vygotsky is that they both believe societal influences establish the boundaries of cognitive growth. The main ideas in Piagets and Vygotskys theories regarding intelligence differ. According to Piaget, intelligence was a product of action. He believed that children learn by interaction with their surrounding and that such learnings occur after development. Vygotsky however, believed that learning occurs before development can and that a child learns because of history and symbolism. Vygotsky also thought that children appreciate input from their surroundings as well as other people. Piaget on the other hand did not place any importance on the input of others. Piaget and Vygotskys theories regarding the stages of development have differing opinions as well. Piagets theory of cognitive development is made up of four stages which mark the emergence of new intellectual abilities. The earliest stage is the sensorimotor stage, which occurs between birth and two years of age. During this stage babies and young children use their senses and motor skills to explore the world. Through physical activity and somewhat accidental motor reflexes intelligence is manifested. Toward the end of this stage children also acquire the concept of object permanence, meaning that they understand an object is there even if the child cannot see it. The next stage in Piagets theory is known as the preoperational stage. This occurs during ages two through seven. During this stage a childs language and concepts develop rapidly, however their thinking process is still rather primitive. In this stage characteristics such as centration occur, which leaves the child so focused on one aspect of a situation that they fail to see other important factors. Another characteristic is that children are egocentric. They believe that everyone thinks, or has the same needs and desires as they do. The third stage in Piagets theory is the concrete operational stage, occurring between the ages of seven and eleven. During this stage children begin to experience a drastic change in their thinking process. Their thoughts become less egocentric and more logical. Reversibility, the ability to perform a mental operation and then reverse ones thinking to return to the starting point (Slavin, 2003, p.33) occurs during this stage. Children at this stage still have difficulty with abstract thought. The last stage in Piagets cognitive development theory is identified as the formal operational stage. It is during this stage in which a child begins to develop abstract and symbolic thoughts. It allows hypothetical situations to be addressed, and problem solving through experimentation. This development gives young adults the ability to reason their way through situations they have not yet experienced. As discussed Piagets theory has four specific stages, however Vygotsky believed that there are no set stages. The first aspect of Vygotskys theory is a mechanism referred to as private speech, talking to oneself. Vygotsky found that it was important to turn shared knowledge into person knowledge. He believed that children would integrate the speech of others into their problem solving process. Private speech is commonly seen amongst young children who talk to themselves openly and often. In adulthood private speech is also very important, although it become silent and internalized it is still a helpful problem solving tool. Vygotskys belief of the zone of proximal development is the second part of his cognitive theory. A zone of proximal development is the level of development immediately above a persons present level (Slavin, 2003, p.44). The zone of proximal development consists of things a child cannot quite do alone, but could accomplish with help from a more experienced child or an adult. It includes tasks a child has not yet learned but is capable of learning. Vygotsky believed that to achieve maximum learning it was important to work with the zone of proximal development. The final idea in Vygotskys cognitive development theory is scaffolding. This includes using encouragement, clues, reminders and assistance in the form of suggestion to aid the child in independently learning. By learning to solve problems independently and without the help of others, the child gains the ability to self-regulate. Both Piaget and Vygotskys cognitive development theories have had an impact on education practices and classroom management. Piagets theory is used in classrooms daily with the use of developmentally appropriate education. Another example of Piagetian theory being used in the classroom is through hands on activities. According to Piaget, young children (preoperational) learn through their actions and are not capable of abstract thought, therefore providing a variety of physical activities for smaller children is essential to any classroom schedule. Aspects of Vygotskys cognitive theory are also found in many classroom settings. An example is a classroom which has the children divided into groups, or tables. This uses Vygotskys ideas regarding use of the zone of proximal development as well as scaffolding. By placing children of varying developmental abilities together for group work, children have the ability to mentor and learn from each other through scaffolding, as well as work in their zone of proximal development. It is clear that cognitive development theories play an important role in addressing the educational needs and learning methods of children of varying stages. Through the theories provided by Piaget and Vygotsky it is possible to create a better classroom experience for not only the student but the teacher as well. When a teacher uses methods to teach children developmentally appropriate material, it makes for a more enjoyable and conducive learning environment. All the intergovernmental organisations and related institutions must come together to coordinate and participate in meetings and seminars annually or semi-annually to formulate plans and implement strategies to avoid the hidden disasters that could arise from the advancing loss of biodiversity and the rare species. The value of ecosystem balance and a sustainable economy must be essential for a stable economy. Thus a good effort must be taken to uplift biodiversity as it contributes to both utilitarian and non utilitarian grounds. I take a mediocre stand in the preservation of bio diversity along with globalising the world extracting mutual benefits from both and contributing to a better economy. The corporate world and related institutions began to exploit the economy under the name of globalisation. Newer generations demanded latest and advanced gadgets to meet the competency levels and to satisfy the needs of emerging markets and labour forces. Nanotechnology, biotechnology, biomedical engineering, aeronautics, geospatial technology, genetics, fitness and holistic nursing, emergency and disaster management strategies, computer forensics, robotics and fields like artificial intelligence have created a yet different view in the whole living standards. The inte nsity, vastness and propensity of interconnectedness made possible through globalisation thus produced a huge impact on the present existence of people. Huge areas got cleared by excess amounts of deforestation and replacement of the space with new constructions and buildings. The prevention factors were suggested by planting quick growing trees in the place of the cut trees. But quick growing trees demanded adequate quantities of surplus water which was impossible to be provided in such high proportions. The typical example was of eucalyptus trees that required enormous gallons of water sources for its growth. As a result of the toxin, the plants got infected that automatically created problems to the fishes in that environment. So whe n the pelicans whose main food was fishes, consumed the fishes as in normal ratios, the toxin entered their body too. Since the energy transfer occurs based on a 10 percent law, the quantity of toxic chemicals that penetrated into the pelican body also. The chemical had a substance inside it that eliminated the cause of formation of coating for the eggs formed inside the pelican bodies. As a result, when the eggs fell onto the ground, broke due to the absence of the hard shell around. Since newborns were not produced, the species got extinct with the current population. The introduction of exotic species is yet another important factor that lead to the extreme loss of biodiversity. The exotic species are introduced for better resilience and adaptability factors with the environment. They display greater survival capacity with their advanced body adjustments and resistance capabilities. A typical example was the bringing in of the population of mongooses in a particular village to reduce the disturbance of snakes. After a period of time, the mongooses wiped off the snakes but as a result of the complete extinction of snakes in that area, there occurred extreme multiplication of rats and rodents since there was an imbalance in the food chain. The end result was snake control but excess population of mice. Hence the theory is that never cause problems to the natural co-existence of species as it would create other uncontrollable troubles in the future. Better varieties of crops and breeds of cattle are produced by artificial techniques and methods of cross breeding and genetically modifying the genital regions of livestock. Disease resistant and pest resistant varieties of crops and related types have lots of preservatives and chemicals added onto it to give the extra juicy and luscious appearance, which are too harmful for the normal metabolic activities to be carried on the human body if consumed above optimum limits. Nowadays Kentucky Fried C hicken (KFC), whoppers and double beef pattie burgers have constantly filled the stores, restaurants and bakeries. People are so addicted to the junk food that there is no way to make them realise the harm it can cause to their delicate skin and body. The fat molecules when deposited around the vital organs can cause bad and alerting symptoms of body disorders. One wouldnt know the true values of an asset until otherwise it is fully gone from the visibility of our eyes. Thus make the maximum effective utilisation of resources without causing harm to their balancing cycles and its self capacity to replenish itself. Usage is not a problem, but the way of handling it is the right method to be practised by individuals. Hence globalisation has brought about lots of positive outcomes but at the same time created havoc and disorder on the other end. So whether it is an industrial progress or a technological plant construction, no matter what, the surrounding areas and the nearby habitats are deeply destructed and devastated. The advancements are invariably achieved by whatever means. There may be many institutions and greedy eyes whose intentions are fixed to draw profits and money under the disguise of progress and emergence as a sole and supreme power. According to me summing up all the aspects covered till now, I go with my stand point proposition as to draw positive benefits from both the parties as both are interlinked and connected to each other. None can stabilise without the other. So giving space for the growth of both simultaneously can only bring about an actual change in the development of economy. Biodiversity is important for the continuation and survival of life and globalisation is required for the regular and constant growth of the existing life. It is true that damage may occur on any of the grounds, but make it a point that the damages affected are less and that the positives overpower the harms followed. Effective strategies and plans can be brought about to implementing right lengths of standards and formulation of techniques to sustain the growth of biodiversity and globalisation parallely. Scheduling and making proper plans as to conserve and preserve the balance of the existing species and creating the environment for their full fledged revival are very important for the future advancement of generations. All the environmental organisations and institutions must cordially work together in establishing a common ground and reap out the necessary outcomes for the mutual benefit of all the economies together as one.
